Youth Chorale FAQ

Where does YCCM rehearse and for how long?

High school ensembles Con Brio (treble voices) and Cantanti (mixed voices) meet on Sunday evenings from 6:00 to 8:10 PM at St. John’s University, with some extended rehearsals during the season.

The elementary and middle school ensembles rehearse on Monday evenings at Apollo High School. Choristers (grades 4–6) meet from 6:00–7:15 PM, and Cantabile Singers (grades 6–8) meet from 6:00–8:00 PM.

The season for all choirs runs from September until early May.

What are the requirements for YCCM?

All singers need to audition to join YCCM. We strongly encourage singers of all ages to stay involved in their school’s choir program whenever possible. These programs provide valuable support for musical growth and complement the YCCM experience. For high school students (grades 9–12), participation in their school’s choral program is a requirement. We understand that some students may have unique educational paths—such as homeschooling or participation in PSEO—that make enrollment in a school choir logistically difficult. In these cases, exceptions may be considered. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the YCCM team with any questions or to discuss your student’s specific situation.

How many concerts per year does YCCM perform?

Each choir performs between 5 and 7 times per year. Performances range from formal concerts to casual school tour performances.

What kinds of music do YCCM choirs sing?

The Youth Chorale performs a diverse range of choral music from masterworks to gospel to pop, and commissions new music every year.

What is the financial commitment?

At YCCM, we believe every singer should be able to participate in our program without financial barriers. That’s why we use a Fair Share Pledge Program instead of traditional tuition. Families are shown the actual cost of the program (about $1,900 per singer) and are invited to pledge an amount that aligns with their budget. For the 2025–26 season, the suggested minimum pledge is $475 for Choristers and $675 for middle school and high school singers, but families are welcome to give more or less based on their means. Flexible payment plans are available to support family budgets, and no singer is ever turned away because of finances.
